Japanese Razors
This is a very busy one day course from 8am - 5pm, run by Dean Jard.
It starts early in the forge with a demonstration on how to forge a razor in high carbon steel. Then it's your turn to hammer out two kamisori. The blades are normalised (de-stressed) before being annealed (softened). Next the firescale is removed on a grinder and the blade starts to take shape. After hollow grinding through various grits on the linisher, the blades are ready heat treatment. After the hardening process, the blades are tempered.
While we are waiting for the razors to cool down, we will make a stand for the blades as well as a strop to keep them sharp.
The kamisori then have a final polish and clean up before being sharpened.
You make two blades so you reinforce the lessons as we go. Our job is to guide, instruct and help you recover from any mistakes. This course requires no previous experience. Experience with tools will make things easier, but is not necessary.
You will enjoy it and have two amazing razors to show off and to shave with.
