San Mai full tang french style picnic knife with blond ‘richlite’ handle.
This blade will come with a leather sheath.
This blade is perfect for the everyday picnic enjoyer, from cutting your apple while out on a trail to spreading pâté upon your baguette.
Richlite is an extremely durable lightweight and sustainable material made from recycled paper and phenolic resin which is then heat and pressure treated to form this wonderful composite handle material.
What is San Mai?
This blade features a high carbon 1075 core, with a softer stainless steel jacket of 410 that has been forge welded onto the blade.
The benefits of a San Mai offers both a practical and visible advantage. The hardened high carbon core offers a superior cutting edge, easy to sharpen and maintain, and the stainless cladding offers a beautiful visible display as well as corrosive resistance.
The haze you can see between the two materials is know as carbon migration, this happens during the forging process as the high carbon from the core wants to move into the low carbon of the stainless jacket.
This does not affect the integrity of the blades cutting edge when forged correctly and allows for quick and easy sharpening while out in the field.
After care: High Carbon steel
Clean with warm soapy water and a soft sponge.
Do not use abrasives, harsh chemicals, soak in the sink or place in dishwasher.
Dry immediately
Pay special attention to the areas near the handle and the cutting edge
Application of a thin coat of food safe mineral oil is recommended, cooking oil is ok.
Store in a dry place
Use your high carbon steel blade for its intended purposes and avoid tasks that may cause excessive stress or damage to the blade.
Avoid twisting or prying, and never use the blade as a screwdriver or can opener.
